Adultery And The Bible

What is Adultery & Adulterous Relationships?

When something has been adulterated it is said to be corrupted. So Adultery is the corruption of something. This is interesting as in recent years people have come to associate adultery only with having intimate relationships outside marriage – when in actual fact the term ‘to adulterate’ most definitely means to corrupt.

So from there let’s see what the Bible says. So one could translate the commandment; Do not commit adultery to; do not commit the sin of corruption – with corruption coming in 10,000 forms! So an adulterer is someone who corrupts things!

You shall not commit adultery. (NIV, Exodus 20:14)
Adultery is the most widely condemned of the sexual sins.
It is mentioned in the Ten Commandments – the four Gospels and ten other books of the Bible.

But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. (NIV, Proverbs 6:32)

And a certain ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments, ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.'” (NAS, Luke 18:18-20)

Adultery destroys marriages. The adulterer shows total disregard for the marriage vows and for his or her spouse. In this passage, Jesus reminds us that not only should we always be faithful, we should also avoid any actions or situations that might eventually tempt us into adultery:

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. (NAS, Matthew 5:27-28)
