The Bible, Christianity & Commitment
“Hey, did you hear about the new ‘young Christian men’s commitment group’? – it has no members!”
A lengthy discussion would be nice here – especially one that dilutes things a bit. Because the fact is we prefer to think of commitment as something that doesn’t require any sacrifice – If only it was! We all struggle with commitment – but subconsciously we all know what it is. No sacrifice really means no commitment, and in a culture where there’s always something brighter and newer round the corner, and where the fruits of commitment are rarely seen, most people find it less and less appealing.
To make things harder we often perceive some things to be more fulfilling to us than they actually might be and so are confused as to what to commit to. So nowadays it’s a big deal to take commitment on. I believe commitment is at the very heart of what it is to be a real man or woman. “Salvation is given to those that endureth to the end!” Commitment is to see something through – not halfway – all the way. Jesus was the best example – a real man who gave up everything for love till the end. We can’t be this perfect but we have a model!
How we respond to commitment can also be an important test of character. It may be a commitment at work or a commitment to a partner. So what if we break a commitment? – We’ve all done it and felt bad about it. We’ve all made wrong turns and decisions. But take heart – although a commitment broken should be seen for what it is – God forgives!
What the Bible Says
Christ has made a commitment to us.
Romans 5:8, NIV.
“God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Commitment is the beginning of trusting God.
Psalm 37:5, TLB.
“Commit everything you do to God – trust Him to help you do it and He will.”
Our commitment to God must be consistent.
Joshua 24:15, NIV.
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
