What is Being Discerning for Christians?

“Discernment comes to those who are humble”

Don’t judge by Appearances…

The brightly coloured stars of today (and yesterday) exude charisma and self confidence. But remember carisma is part of their training and may or may not be based on strong foundations, – what you see on tv are actors whos job it is to appear confident. A bit of discernment is useful here. Underneath we are surprisingly similar in terms of our hopes and fears and insecurities.

. . . or a book by its cover!

I’m not suggesting all great things come in dull packages because they don’t. You only have to look at nature to see that. But look at the Bible. On the outside the most boring book you could possibly imagine. But on the inside . . . the key to the universe! And remember, it may even take a couple of pages before you realise what a fantastic read it is! God often deploys this upsidedown logic. It’s like saying “what’s inside is important” what’s outside is not so important, but I shall decorate it how I please.

What The Bible says on discernment & being discerning.

Discernment is essential in making wise decisions
James 1:5, TLB.
“If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him, and He will gladly tell you, for He is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask Him; He will not resent it.”

Discernment is essential for spiritual growth. Hebrews 5:14, TLB.
“You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the deeper things of God’s Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing doing right.”

Discernment comes to those who are humble. Psalms 25:9, NIV.
“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”

Spiritual things are spiritually discerned. I Corinthians 2:13,14, NIV.
“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
